La Liga is taking a break and for most of the squad this is instead a crunch week on the road to Russia 2018. On this page we follow the fortunes of all our international players

  3. OCTOBER 6: Back in Europe, Spain are in action later today at home to Albania in Alicante (kick off 8.45pm CET). La Roja are three points clear of Italy as it stands, and although a victory tonight probably won't be enough to secure mathematical qualification, it would take something extraordinary for Julen Lopetegui's side not to clinch a spot on the final day.
  4. Remember, Jordi Alba, Andrés Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and Gerard Piqué of FC Barcelona are all included in the squad.
  5. OCTOBER 5: Meanwhile, Chile have beaten Ecuador 2-1, and that means they move ahead of Argentina - squeezing Messi, Mascherano and co out of the qualifying places going into the final round of matches. That result also puts Ecuador totally out of the picture.
  6. And in the other game, Paraguay have rather unexpectedly won 2-1 in Colombia, a result that has sent Argentina a lifeline. It means Colombia still have work to do to make it to Russia 2018, and they'll have to do that work away to Peru on the final day. So something has got to give between those two, meaning that as long as Argentina can win away to Ecuador, they will be guaranteed at least a playoff berth against New Zealand.
  7. Had Colombia beaten Paraguay, then even a win in Quito might not have been enough for Argentina - but as it stands, it's still very much game on! What's for sure is that the games on October 10 are going to be absolute crackers!
  8. OCTOBER 5: It's all over at the Bombonera and it was not the result that Argentinawanted. It was one-way traffic for almost the entire 90 minutes, with Peru happy just to fight for a draw and defending brilliantly. Leo Messi was everywhere - just about all the attacking play came through the Barça superstar but the goals just did not want to come.
  9. Benedetto was his main ally in attacking moves, but the Boca Juniors striker failed to convert any of the many assists, while Messi sent his best chance onto the post. Mascherano also joined in with a decent attempt that sailed over the Peruvian bar. Towards the end, there was even a late flurry from the Andeans that could have made the damage worse, but keeper Sergio Romero responded with a couple of class saves.
  10. OCTOBER 5: The Bombonera in Bueno Aires is packed to the rafters for Argentina's crunch game at home to Peru. Javier Mascherano and Lionel Messi both start for a team that needs to beat one of its direct qualification rivals in what promises to be a very tense night indeed for the albiceleste.
  11. OCTOBER 5: Goals are hard to come by in South America tonight. It's ended without score in Venezuela and that's not good enough for Luis Suárez and Uruguay. They'll need to wait until the final day and a home fixture against Bolivia to confirm their place in Russia.
  12. OCTOBER 5: It's all over in La Paz, where the man of the moment was Bolivian keeper Lampe, who made save after save to prevent Brazil from adding another three points to their already impressive haul. Paulinho, who was on for 82 minutes before being replaced by Fernandinho, had one of the many clear-cut opportunities to score, but his strike was turned onto the post by the extraordinary stopper. The final score of 0-0 is no major shake for Brazil, however, as they were already guaranteed at place at Russia 2018.
  13. Goals are just as hard to come by in the other game that's started in South America. It's Venezuela 0-0 Uruguay at half time.
  14. OCTOBER 5Uruguay's game in Venezuela has kicked off, with Luis Suárez lining up in the visiting attack. A win for the celeste would be enough to ensure qualification for next summer's finals regardless of what happens in their final match.
  15. OCTOBER 5: Nobody ever really doubted it was going to happen, but now it's official. Germany will be going to Russia to defend their World Cup title. In Belfast this evening, Sebastian Rudy got things going with an absolute belter, Sandro Wagner had made it two before the break, and Joshua Kimmich finished off the job four minutes from the end. That's seven wins out of seven for Germany!
